In Forest Hills... Sarah Jones, Terrace, and Madeleine will probably have the nicest places (and they're worth looking at), while Benjamin and Kingdom will probably have more stuff for people on more of a budget. And there are probably about a dozen more little interchangable realtors tucked away somewhere, too.
I'm not an expert on the ramifications of co-op vs. condo, but if you're willing to walk, you can probably find some small 3-bedroom townhouses for not much more than a centrally-located 1-bedroom coop with a maintenance fee. (Maybe. I haven't actually looked in six years...) Good luck!
